Makeup for me has always been an indulgent world of self-loving, make believe and thought-provoking fragrances, amidst a forest of textures and a sea of colour. There is something magical about makeup: from the influential role it plays in the lives of those who wear it, to the way in which it brings out the inner creativity in the most serious of wearers! The history of makeup goes back hundreds of years (possibly, more) but the 20th century has definitely seen the fastest development in quality and choice, as well as the rise in popularity compared to any other previous time period. If you have a love for make-up and would like to delve into the history of the twentieth century’s most iconic hair and make-up looks then I would highly recommend "Timeless: A Century of Iconic Looks" by Louise Young.

Louise Young is a professional British makeup artist who has worked in various sectors of the makeup, film and media industry over the last 30 years. She already has a fantastic make-up brush collection, offering a range of high quality brushes and tools that is very popular among professional artists as well as regular beauty fanatics. I first heard of Louise Young after purchasing one of the best eyebrow brushes I have ever tried. So when I heard that she was releasing a book full of vintage makeup information and tutorials, I had to read it!

Louise Young's new book: "Timeless: A Century of Iconic Looks" is the makeup tool I never knew I needed. I bought it a few months ago, purely to look at the pictures of beautifully created make-up looks but instead, I have became hooked on learning everything that the book teaches!
The book takes you through each decade of the 20th century and provides in-depth details on the hair and make-up trends of the time, with easy to follow tutorials on how to recreate the look yourself. Available in both Kindle and Paper format, Timeless: A Century of Iconic Looks offers a wealth of information beginning from early 20th century, going all the way through to modern day.

Personally, I find the history of makeup fascinating because it has evolved so much in a relatively small space of time, as have people’s attitude towards cosmetics. The early 20th century sees cosmetics becoming more widely available to ladies from all social classes. Makeup looks were originally kept light and simple but women would wear it consistently. By the time of World War II women, who had become accustomed to wearing beauty products, would have to go without any makeup because the popular makeup brands of that era were busy making camouflage make-up for soldiers fighting in the war. What’s great about Louise Young’s book is that it offers very detailed and fascinating information, as well as providing you with simple hair and makeup tutorials that absolutely anybody could follow. You don't need to equipped with a professional knowledge before diving in and reading this guide, everything is simple to follow and suitable for all levels!
Unlike other makeup books and educational materials, I feel that Louise has got it right here by including several different style tutorials per decade. We are so used to seeing one standard look for each decade but this was no more the case then than it is now – not everybody wears the same styles and of course, fashion evolution is naturally inevitable over the course of 10 years. No matter whether you are looking for a professional’s take on the make-up worn by your favourite Hollywood icon or you would like to broaden your knowledge of vintage makeup and general technique, this is a fantastic and easy-to-digest source for any fashion savvy girl!
P.s. this would make a fantastic gift!
