The Work at Home Wardrobe
Working from home? Here are 4 winning outfit styles that will ensure you’re dressed for success! You don’t need to get overly dressed up when working from home, but I would absolutely recommend that you make it part of your morning routine to get up and get dressed, rather than lazing around in your sleepwear all day. It will make you feel more business like, more professional and ready to tackle your day. No matter what your work from home day looks like, these styling tips will help you to look your best in every situation!
Video conferences are a great way of having virtual face-to-face meetings with colleagues and clients. The best part about them is that you can stay in the loop and negotiate business from wherever you choose, including the comfort of your own home. Typically, in a video conference call, only the top half of you is visible to those on the other end of the call. So, ideally you want to achieve a professional looking head shot image when taking a video call. The best way to ensure that you look business appropriate and aren’t going to be distracted by your appearance in the thumbnail video image of you, focus your attention on perfecting your hair, makeup and choose a great shirt.
Speaking from personal experience, I’d advise against creating messy waves or adventurous curls in your hair, unless you have been blessed with natural curls or are a pro at curling your hair. The reason I say this is that I have, in the past, spent forever curling my hair prior to a video call, only for it then to look scruffy and unkept when I’ve checked my reflection in the video call camera! This wasn’t the look I was going for! Unfortunately, dramatic makeup and striking hairdos don’t always appear as wonderful on camera as they do in real life – and vice versus of course! My advice to you would be to stick to classic hair and makeup that you can get right every time! Accessorise with pretty hair accessories or stunning jewellery and choose a beautiful top to wear too. This bow top is striking but casual and could easily be teamed with a pair of jeans and worn for a conference call.
First of all, I think that all of the clothes you own should be comfortable on some level – why else would you buy them?! Secondly, when working from home, I believe it’s really important that you get up and get dressed every morning. It might sound like an insignificant part of your daily routine, especially if you’re home alone, but it will make you feel much more motivated! There are however, certain garments that are super comfortable and cosy, like a cute loungewear set. Loungewear is like wearing your pyjamas, but is considered socially acceptable when worn outside or during the daytime.
Thankfully, loungewear has dramatically improved in recent years and now appeals to those of us who like to adorn feminine attire. These pink loungewear pants almost resemble a more formal type of garment, like trousers. I love how they can be worn for a workout or with my Chanel-inspired cardigan for a dressed-up look. Personally, I don’t like to live in loungewear when working from home. However, when I have a day set aside for writing blog posts, there is nothing better than wearing something comfortable and stylish for getting stuck into a blog writing session!
Don’t forget your outfit of the day posts for social media! I love seeing how people style their outfits each day and if you log your daily outfit of the day over some time you’ll see patterns occur in your dressing habits. I myself go through phases of wearing the same thing regularly and then other times, my outfits vary drastically from day to day! If you post an outfit of the day post regularly and realise you only wear a select number of items from your wardrobe, why not try to switch things up by making outfits out of the garments you rarely wear. Failing that, you could always donate or swap the clothes you wear less often or not at all. There are many easy ways to dress for comfort and glamour while working from home. Recently, I’ve started to experiment with wearing leggings, co-ords, jumpsuits, including this black lace bodysuit. The fantastic thing about these all-in-one types of outfits is that they give the impression that you’ve made a real effort, when actually they're super easy to just slip on and look fantastic!
There’s no law that says you shouldn’t get dressed up if you’re not going out. If you want to put on a dress and heels to watch Netflix or to video call your colleagues or gal pals then why not!? Also, over the years that I’ve worked from home, I’ve attended many evening video conferences and meetings, for which I've been required to dress more formal. Many people dislike the idea of having to get dressed up when working from home but it can actually be a lot of fun! For one, you can communicate over video calls, capture gorgeous photos of your outfit of the night and wear your most striking pair of heels without having to worry about walking home in them and getting blisters! A corset dress makes a sophisticated statement for an evening outfit. I also love how versatile wrap dresses are and how they’re a timeless wardrobe staple. Lately, I’ve been experimenting with styling my dresses into more casual, daytime looks by wearing them with boots, trainers and flat shoes. Stay up to date with my daily outfit posts on Instagram.
Whether or not you choose to work from home, or are currently being forced to work remotely due to circumstances you can’t control, I believe that any situation is only as good as you make it! Yes, you can make use of the fact that you don’t have to get dressed up when you’re not feeling up to it – which has its benefits. On the other hand, you can use the time to wear whatever you choose, experiment with your style, wear the clothes you don’t get a chance to wear very often and of course, have fun!
