Simple Knitting Series: Learn How to Knit Without Needles in Just 5 Minutes!
Learning how to knit without needles is fast, fun and just as useful as traditional forms of knitting! I started practising finger knitting at the end of last year and ever since then I have been hooked! It is such a fantastic skill to master and enables you to create a variety of wonderful items. Since starting, I’ve hand knitted two scarves and a beanie hat. Knitting in general has seen a sudden rise in popularity over the past few years, especially among the younger generation. This classic fashion design skill is no longer age-restricted – which I think is fantastic!
There are a few different types of knitting, as well as crocheting. There is hand knitting, finger knitting (also known as finger weaving), and there is also knitting with needles. I’ve chosen to show you how to knit using just your fingers and wool. It is very simple and doesn’t take much time at all to master. As you progress, you may want to experiment with knitting using needles, or turning your hand at hand knitting (see what I did there?) to create beautiful, chunky knitwear like those huge arm-knitting blankets that we are seeing everywhere at the moment! I find that knitting can be very addictive. Once you start, the repetitive notion of weaving is very therapeutic. If I happen to sit down in front of the TV to watch a TV series or film (which is rare as I am not a huge TV fan) then I like to have something else to do at the same time. Quite often, I will craft while sat in front of the television or while listening to a podcast and knitting is one of those perfect crafts!
In this “Simple Knitting Series” Part ONE we are going to look at the basics of knitting using just your fingers.

Learn How to Knit Without Needles
You will need:
- 1 ball of wool
- One of your hands
How to:
- Take the end of your wool and grasp it with your thumb.
- Now start to weave under your index finger, over your middle finger, under your ring finger, over your little finger and then go back on yourself. Repeating the same “under” and “over” pattern. By the time you weave the wool back to your index finger, each finger should have two rows of wool.
- Take the bottom row of wool on each finger and one by one, pull the bottom line up and over each finger so that you are left with just one row of wool on each of your four fingers.
- Now repeat the exact same process, starting over your middle finger, under your ring finger, over your little finger and then back on yourself. Then when each finger has two rows of wool, bring the bottom row up and over each finger.
- As you repeat this process you will see a knitting trail begin to form behind the hand you are using.
