How to Update a Bathroom on a Budget
There’s no doubt about it, bathrooms get a lot of use. We bathe in them, shower in them, dye our hair in them, shave our bits in them and put our make-up on in them. The list of what bathrooms go through on a day-to-day basis goes on and on.
On top of the daily use, bathrooms also come under attack from water, heat and moisture, which can mean they need a lot of upkeep to keep them looking their best.
New bathrooms aren’t cheap though, even before you take into consideration the cost of fitting and decorating them. I’m sure you have other things to spend your money on - perhaps you’re currently in a rent to buy property while saving for a deposit.
With that in mind, here’s how to update a bathroom on a budget.
This is probably the least fun way to update a bathroom on a budget so I’ll start with this first. Of course, you may love cleaning grout and if so, good for you, please come and do mine too!
However, most people find putting up with a bit of less-than-pristine grout is a lot easier than actually cleaning it.
But if you can find it in you to clean your bathroom’s grout, you’ll find your bathroom looks a whole lot cleaner, fresher and more pleasant overall.
You can find specialist grout cleaner in any hardware shop and, for a real makeover, you can buy pens with which to colour your grout but be warned, you’ll need a steady hand and patience for it to look professional and not like a child scrawled over your tiles.
Shiny new taps will make the world of difference to your bathroom without the need to change the entire suite.
Sure, good quality taps aren’t cheap but they’ll last for years and will be easier to keep looking new, so they’ll save you money in the long run as they won’t need replacing so often.
Get matching basin taps, bath taps and shower head and, although this isn’t a cheap update, it’s an effective one. After all, who doesn’t admire shiny taps?
Changing your bathroom floor can be far cheaper than changing your bathroom taps. Forget that naff, knackered lino from the 70s, things have improved since then.
There’s a huge range of vinyl on offer now and, as well as being cheap to buy, they're also cheap to have fitted if it’s not something you want to try to do yourself. Just be aware that you may need to hire a skip to get rid of the old flooring, as it's not usually something you can put in your general waste. A 10 yard skip is a great size for a single room remodel, so you needn't worry about it being too big for your project.
Ah, now here’s the fun part of updating a bathroom on a budget. Although spending money on buying stuff isn’t exactly budgeting, how much you spend is up to you.
You can buy bathroom accessories from the trendiest shop in town if you’re the type who wants to impress their friends with brands but, for us mere mortals, supermarkets and cheaper stores such as Wilko, B&M and pound shops have some really attractive bathroom accessories that won’t break the bank.
Update your bathroom on a budget with new towels, blinds, shower curtain or screen, mirrors, pictures, plants, rugs, bathmats, soap dispensers, storage baskets, toothbrush holders and anything else that takes your fancy.
These are just a few ways to update your bathroom on a budget. It’s not the same as a beautiful brand new bathroom, but sometimes we just have to make the best of what we have, don’t we?
